How do you know what your barrels are actually worth?. Distilleries can be quick to tell you how many barrels are in their warehouse, far fewer can tell you what those barrels actually cost to fill, what they are worth now, and who legally owns them. Here, we look at the important, and increasingly expanding role of distillery inventory management software across spirits operations, as many look to advance with the best digital systems available. We dive into how a distillery inventory management system differs from an ERP, what to look for when making buying decisions, and the questions worth asking before you sign anything.

This partnership with Heriot-Watt University gives graduates hands-on experience with the digital tools actually being used today. There is a gap currently between how distilling is taught today, and how distilleries are actually run. A new way of thinking was coming through from graduates proficient in using technology from an early age, yet they were rarely taught about the actual systems distilleries were using, let alone had any practical skills in using them. In some cases, coming on site at a new employer, they were met with more traditional ways of doing things ( spreadsheets , legacy systems, paper records) and could see the tools weren’t there that could make operations more efficient. That's now changed with our new partnership with Heriot-Watt University that supports students the minute they start distilling courses. A partnership that supports graduates and industry

The time to prove any claim is undoubtedly here. Making a claim of origin, provenance or ownership without being able to back it up has always been a problem plaguing the spirits industry. Now we’re seeing more and more new standards coming in across the US and UK which mean that vague, unverified claims not only count for very little, they count against you. Legislation is now catching up with consumer and industry demand for tighter regulation and greater transparency. The time to prove any claim is undoubtedly here. Almost every new standard, label rule and category claim coming to US distillers’ doors in the last couple of years asks not what you did, but whether you can show it. Likewise in the UK, the government just passed the new protected status for English Whisky , joining Scotch, Irish and Welsh Whisky as a recognised member of the UK’s whisky family, with requirements to prove English provenance.
